Christian Schweers believes it is a great time to be a head basketball coach.

Schweers, an assistant coach on Mountain Brook's Class 7A state title teams the past two seasons, was approved tonight to lead Huntsville High.

"I am an energetic, positive guy," Schweers, 33, said. "I know Huntsville High has resources, what they need to be successful. I think Huntsville's best days lie ahead."

Schweers was the head coach for two seasons at Birmingham's Cornerstone School, where he launched the program in 2014. Prior to that, he worked his first stint at Mountain Brook, assisting Bucky McMillan as the Spartans won two 6A state championships.

Huntsville went 11-16 last season in Mike Holt's second year. Schweers will be the Panthers' seventh coach in the last seven seasons.

Schweers feels that creating the right habits will be key.

"The players need to play with passion, work hard and sacrifice," he said. "If we become consumed with doing those things, we will have reached our potential."

The coach added the only two things they can control on the court are attitude and effort.

Schweers said the Huntsville roster will be senior-laden.

"We want to make it a good experience for them," he said. "If they buy in, they can establish a culture, then come back later and enjoy the fruits of their labor."

Schweers played at Trinity Presbyterian in Montgomery for his dad, longtime Wildcats coach Jack Schweers. A high school injury led to Christian being a volunteer assistant at Trinity when he was 19. A year later he joined the staff of that team for four years, then moved to Mountain Brook.
