In a “blackout night” at Spartan Stadium, Sims Herron raced the opening kickoff 88 yards to the house. Mountain Brook never looked back and defeated Tuscaloosa County, 40-0, on Friday night.

“Sims did a great job but so did the other 10 guys,” said Mountain Brook head coach Chris Yeager. “They set their blocks, each man got a hat on a hat and that kick return set the tone for the night."

That was all the Spartans (5-1, 3-1 in Class 7A, Region 3) needed, but they kept going.

“All of our coaches on defense are getting everything out of our players,” Yeager said.

Everything and more. The Tuscaloosa County (2-5, 0-4) offense did not get past midfield until late in the second half. By then, the starters had completed their contributions for the evening. Senior defensive end Sam Colvin caught a tipped pass on the Spartan 16-yard line midway through the 3rd quarter to thwart the Wildcats’ best scoring chance.

Mason Dillard connected on field goals of 38 and 46 yards on the night. Hamp Sisson led the offense, completing 10 of 12 passes for 179 yards and a 12-yard touchdown pass to Wilson Higgins, who clawed his way in for the score with 5:20 remaining in the second quarter.

“We stuck to our gameplan and each receiver did their role very well. It was a great team effort,” Sisson said after the game.

Sam Everette carried the ball for the Spartans 18 times and picked up 78 yards, including a 3-yard touchdown. Sophomore AJ Gates sped to a 28-yard score in the fourth quarter and McKee Brown added 36 yards on 9 carries.

The Spartan defense had four sacks on Tuscaloosa County’s quarterback, Sam Cooper. Will Wetzler, Connor Bussman, Mabry Crane and Avery Schelske all got a piece of the action.

Sean Elmore and Sims Herron led the receiving corps. Elmore had 3 catches for 79 yards, one of which set up the Everette touchdown. Herron had 4 catches for 68 yards.

Next week, Tuscaloosa County will host Oak Mountain and Mountain Brook will travel to face crosstown rival, Vestavia Hills, both in Class 7A, Region 3 matchups.

“You can throw the record out the window with this game,” Yeager said of next week’s matchup. “Our players know Vestavia and when it’s 7:00 next Friday night, our guys will come together and fight for each other.”
