The Spartans fell behind 1-0 in just the 2nd minute as the #1 Patriots (6A) scored early on a penalty kick. Just minutes later the Spartans had a great opportunity to tied the score but fired a shot just over the bar from close range. Homewood then doubled their lead in the 24th minute on a counter attack. Goalie Reid Freeman denied the initial goal attempt but wasn't able to stop the follow up shot. From there the Spartans came roaring back as a huge home crowd led to inspired play. There were several missed chances over the next five minute before Zach Shunnarah buried a penalty kick for the home side to make it 2-1. There were a few more golden chances to draw level but the Spartans went to the half down one.

The home crowd was even louder in the 2nd half and the boys responded when, after missing a few more opportunities, Sam Rysedorph took a shot from about 20 yards out that the keeper couldn’t control and Blake Roth stormed in for the finish just 5 minutes into the 2nd half. Coach Webb named Sam Rysedorph as the man of the match with him winning countless tackles all over the field as well as getting the assist on the tying goal.

The game was very high tempo with many more chances for both the Spartans and a few for Patriots, but the tie was the end result. There were numerous hard challenges from both sides in a very hard fought game but both sides repeatedly helped up the other players after such collisions displaying great sportsmanship.

Side note: Homewood's head coach - Coach McBride's first high school job was as MB's Head Coach Joe Webb's assistant many, many years ago.
